Waste Collection and Disposal

Waste collection and disposal represent the proper treatment of all types of materials and items generated during production, service, or other activities, items that are no longer in use, as well as waste substances that arise from consumption and are no longer usable from the perspective of either the producer or the consumer.

Since these materials and items directly affect the environment and, consequently, human health, waste management is one of the pressing issues not only in our country but across the entire world.

Research shows that 3 billion people have no means of disposing of waste in controlled landfills. The situation is further aggravated by industrial development and urbanization, causing the amount of waste to grow exponentially. It is estimated that by 2050 it will exceed 4 billion tons.

With this in mind, the European Union countries, as well as ours, aim to reduce waste disposal in landfills by 10 percent and increase recycling to 65 percent by the year 2035.

Waste collection and disposal according to the place of origin

According to the place of origin, the most common types of waste are municipal, construction, and industrial waste.

Municipal waste consists of commercial waste and household waste. For the most part, it includes biological or biodegradable materials, paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic.

Construction waste in Belgrade arises from construction works. Waste collection and disposal of this type primarily involve the removal of rubble, i.e., bricks, tiles, concrete, and wood. It also includes soil from excavations with mini excavators and other heavy machinery, as well as waste generated during road works.

Through recycling, construction waste can serve as raw material for the production of new construction materials.

Industrial waste, as the name suggests, is waste generated by the operation of any industry, excluding waste from mines and quarries. In Belgrade, this type of waste is mostly transported to landfills.

Waste collection and disposal according to toxicity

Non-toxic, i.e., safe waste, includes waste material that is not harmful to human health or the environment.

In contrast, toxic waste includes that which, due to its origin, composition, or concentration of hazardous substances, can cause serious consequences for the environment and human health.

In other words, waste that has hazardous properties such as flammability, explosiveness, carcinogenicity, tendency to oxidize, the ability to release toxic gases through chemical reactions or biological decomposition, as well as in contact with air or water.

A special category is inert waste. This type of waste is not subject to any physical, chemical, or biological changes; it does not dissolve, decompose, burn, or otherwise physically or chemically react.
